The extraordinary journey of Malik Amber from slave to Kingmaker
Malik Amber is one the iconic figures in history, whose story inspires people.He was the man of intelligence, knowledge and resilience which raised him from being a slave to a powerful king of Deccan.Malik was born in the year 1548 in Ethiopia, the present day Sudan.As a young boy Malik had big dreams of becoming a great person one day.But his dreams were captured under slavery.He was captured and sold in slavery and then transported into Indian Subcontinent,which was at that time the most common fate of every Africans.But unlike every other africans who ended up there whole life in slavery,Amber ended up becoming a great kingmaker and the most influential figure of history of Deccan in the late 16th and early 17th century.
But the question arises how a poor slave from Africa who was sold to India ended up becoming
a great personality? So before getting into the life story of Amber we first need to understand
that whatever heights he had achieved in his life was not just his fate but also his skills, his
determination and most importantly his Intelligence. It was Portuguese who made a raid in the
Horn of Africa where Malik was captured and brought to India as a slave.Initially he was sold to
a merchant who later sold him to the nobleman of Deccan, a region in the southern part of
Gujrat. And Amber kept on selling from one master to another.But ultimately he was sold to the
Nizam Shahi Sultanate of Ahmadnagar, where he did not know that this master is going to
change his fate.He was initially employed as a bodyguard but his intelligence and military power
caught the attention of the this master the Nizam Shahi Sultanate of Ahmadnagar. He was gifted
with good strategies and power to endure difficult times.Due to his military skills he was
employed in the Sultanate’s military,where his honesty and victories earned him the trust of the
Nizam.Additionally he took education including military training which enhanced his skills and
promoted him to the nobel position in the army, as an army general.His responsibilities
increased during the time of the invasion of Marathas ,The Mughals, who jostled for
dominance,but the skills, tactics and his bravery defeated them all.By the time the Nizam of
Ahmadnagar Shahi Sultanate along with his powerful and dominant military leader Malik Amber
was winning battles after battles.But one the good fortune of the Nizam took a turn,he passed Away.The passing away of his master had shocked him a lot because the nizam was not just his
mater but also a companion who served with him in battles.
Due his master he learned varios new skills and gain confidence.But Malik Amber did not know the the passing away of his master would brought a great positive change in his life.The wife of Nizam freed him from Slavery after the passing away of the Nizam after which he got married.Then Amber served as the sultan of Bijapur,where he got the title “Malik”.During his rule he brought many changes, he changed the capital of the capital of Ahmednagar from Pranda to Junnar.He also founded a new city and named it khadki which was later on renamed as Arungabad by the mughal emperor Aurangzeb.During his rule he won ,any battles and kept the reputation of his former master and teacher the Nizam.He defeated the mughal general Khan Khannan for many times.
Despite of having so many success his power started to decline and he was defeated by the mughal emperor Jahangir.It was at his end of life when he lost all that he had established so far. One day the news of the Amber death spread among people.He passed away in 1626.After his passing the Dynasty in which he served bravely as a king and took it to a new height had lost and surrendered into the hands of the Mughal King Jahangir in 1636.The passing away of Malik had a great impact on his people.Today Malik Amber is remembered as one among the greatest people in history,who build his life and career and achieved his dream from the vey beginning.
